The European Construction Products Directive 89/106 (CPD) has introduced in the sector a wide range of harmonized standards also at the level of technical specifications for products placed on the market.
The construction products were divided into 33 families for each of which the European Commission issued a mandate, in the form of a detailed specification, to request CEN to develop the necessary harmonized standards.
These mandates also specify the requirements for each family to obtain the attestation of conformity.

For these three types of product, the most commonly envisaged systems of attestation of conformity are:
System 2+
Declaration of Conformity issued by the manufacturer on the basis of initial type tests carried out under its own responsibility, and the intervention of a Notified Body which carries out continuous surveillance of the factory production control carried out by the Manufacturer.
System 4
Declaration of Conformity issued by the manufacturer on the basis of initial type tests and a factory production control carried out under his own responsibility.
